Species of Wood
Hardwood floors come in many different species. Depending on the species you choose, your floor could have anything from a rustic, down-home look to a clean, metropolitian feel. The following pictures and descriptions of the different species used in hardwood floors should give you a good idea of what to expect from each species. The pictures show the species stained a standard color, but there are several other stain colors available for each species.

When you come into our store, we can show you larger samples of each of the species and help you best decide which choice is right for you.

Call us for more information. We'd like the chance to help you!

Oak
Oak is a very popular wood choice because of its availability, price, look and relative strength. This species is used frequently by furniture builders for the same reasons. The wood is mostly straight-grained, with a coarse texture.
Oak - Rotary Cut
This wood is just as durable as regular oak. However, because it is cut from the tree differently (see photos), it has a cleaner look and more random grains.

Cherry
Cherry is a great alternative to Oak as it has a more open grain. This wood has a fine uniform, straight grain, satiny, and smooth texture.
Maple
Maple has a cleaner look than Oak or Cherry. This wood has a close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained, but it can also occur as "curly," "fiddleback," and "birds-eye" figure.

Hickory/Pecan
Hickory/Pecan has a look which varies from piece to piece and it can have knotholes. This wood is coarse-textured and the grain is fine, usually straight but can be wavy or irregular.
Walnut
Walnut is generally straight-grained, but sometimes with wavy or curly grain that produces an attractive and decorative figure. This species produces a greater variety of figure types than any other.
Pine
Pine creates a more rustic look with many knotholes and variations.
Exotic Woods
These imported woods range from as clean as maple to more varied than pine. If you are looking for something a little different, or if the other species do not appeal to you, then come see our collection of exotic imports.
