Hardwood manufacturers make hardwoods either as an engineered or solid piece of wood. Both engineered and solid hardwoods come in a variety of species, colors, and sub-features to give you a beautiful wood floor to last for years to come. Both have the same durability when comparing the same species and finish. However, there are differences between the two. Below we've listed the differences to help you to select the best one for you. To see and touch both types, come see us. We have many samples of both solid and engineered wood in our showroom. We'd like the chance to help you!
Engineered Hardwood
Solid Hardwood
- Made from multiple cross plies of hardwood with a durable top layer.

- Comes in many different thicknesses and can be as thin as 5/16" an inch.

- Low Profile: can fit under existing appliances and doors without remodelling.

- Usually glued down to the slab, but some can be nailed or stapled down also.

- More stable and less susceptible to moisture and humidity.

- Can be sanded and restained over several generations of use.

- The standard size is 3/4" thick.

- Usually nailed down to install. If installing on a concrete slab, a layer of plywood must be installed first so that the solid hardwood can be nailed to it.

- Expands and contracts with your home's relative humidity.

- Not well suited for high moisture areas like bathrooms.
